CAHS believes that visual and performing arts are essential in the creation of a ‘well rounded’ student with a complete education. Studying the arts enables students to connect to content in new ways and come to a greater understanding of oneself and others. The arts convey meaning and knowledge about aesthetics and aural/visual perception that cannot be acquired through studying other subjects. The study of music, in particular, has been demonstrated to improve student test scores, spatial skills and abstract reasoning ability. CAHS instruction follows the state standards (artistic perception, creative expression, historical and cultural context, aesthetic valuing and connections/relationships/applications) in order to provide students with an enriching and academically rigorous study of the arts.
The Theatre Arts program focuses on group and individual performance, the history of theatre, careers in theatre, development of a theatre vocabulary, building individual performance skills (vocal and movement), character analysis, making connections to other content areas and developing skills in critical analysis/aesthetic valuing.
The Music program focuses on group performance, improving individual vocal technique, an introduction to the history of Classical music, the study of various musical styles, developing aural skills and critical analysis, music theory and sight singing.
The Graphic Arts program focuses on architectural design; namely design throughout history and the world, two and three-dimensional perspectives, and the drawing of house plans to specifications.
